Why ABFuels?
Due to their lower risk of land-use change, Advanced BioFuels are considered key for achieving net-zero emissions and mitigating climate change. However, these biofuels are not something new. Advanced BioFuels have been around us for years.
In the specific case of advanced bioethanol, the first industrial facility (Beta Renewable) was opened in 2013. After that, other initiatives flourished in the USA (Dupont, Poet-DSM, Abengoa) and Brazil (Granbio, Raízen).

Although advanced biofuels are a trend supported by rising global demand and fresher policy frameworks, the production of these more sustainable biofuels has not grown as expected. Nowadays, only 0.2% of the bioethanol consumed globally comes from non-edible feedstocks, and most of the companies mentioned above had to close their facilities.

Globally, more than 200,000 litres
of bioethanol are consumed per minute
From ABFuels, we believe the failure of advanced bioethanol is partly due to the approach given. We are talking about huge facilities (production capacity: around 80 million liters of bioethanol per year) focused on valorizing a single feedstock, which restricts their location to only a few places worldwide.

That is why we plan to approach this market with a new kind of facilities that are both:

To achieve this, we plan to work hand in hand with the best research teams in these fields to re-evaluate the technology used.

Through this concept idea, we seek to build a facility capable of being replicated over the world to scale up its impact and biofuel volume.
Small-scale
Our facilities will produce about 3-5 million liters per year. Besides, we aim to use the compacter technologies available for reducing their size and use complexity.
Feedstock-flexible
The capacity of working with multiple feedstocks (organic residues) will allow us to easily gather the amount of biomass required to work over the year (around 10,000-15,000 tons dry weight).
We aim to start producing the biofuel
the future scenario is asking us for
